One of the best parts of living in Walla Walla is how many gorgeous places there are to photograph. After 18 years of creating portraits here, I know the most popular spots inside and out and I've found a few other gems that might surprise you.
Whether you're just starting to think about portraits or you've been meaning to book for years, this is the perfect place to start. For each spot, I'll share what I love about it, when to go, and a few tips that will make everything go more smoothly on photo day.
Scroll through, get inspired, and if anything gets you thinking, I'd love to hear about it.

Honorable Mention
Brick facades, industrial alleyways, colorful storefronts — downtown has a mix of textures and backdrops that photograph beautifully. Stroll Main Street for charming shopfronts and pops of color. Duck into the alleys and you'll find raw brick and industrial iron that's been there since Walla Walla's earliest days.
All year
➡️ Most of the best spots are on
or just off Main Street, so you're never
walking far between setups.
➡️ Grab a sweet treat or a glass of wine
along the way. It makes for great photos
and turns the session into something
that feels more like an evening out.
➡️ Works best for individuals and couples-
backdrops can be a bit tight for families.
Pioneer Park is a classic Walla Walla portrait location, and for good reason. Massive maples and sycamores stretch over winding paths, the duck pond adds graceful curves, and the iconic gazebo provides a central anchor. Spring brings blossoms and bursts of color; fall fills the park with rich, warm gold and amber tones.
Fall
➡️ Park near the restrooms.
It puts you right in the center
of the park- close to everything.
➡️ Plan to start your session a
little earlier here than you might
elsewhere. The tree canopy is thick
and the light fades faster underneath it.
➡️ Because it's darker under the
trees, a little artificial light goes a
long way. Flash opens up possibilities
that natural light alone can't touch.
There's a reason Whitman's picturesque campus shows up in every local photographer's portfolio. College Creek winds through the heart of it, slipping under stone bridges, past towering trees, and ivy-covered brick. The mix of manicured grounds and historic buildings gives you a park-like feel with built-in texture and variety.
Fall
(it’s one of the first spots where colors start to turn in the valley)
➡️ The creek is where the magic happens.
We'll usually wind our way along it,
following the light and finding
the best spots for that moment.
➡️ There's a great mix of natural
and architectural backdrops here,
so you can get a wide range of looks
without covering much ground.
➡️ Works beautifully for seniors,
couples, and families alike.
Plenty of room to spread out.
Bennington Lake is my top pick for that sun-drenched, golden hour glow. Rolling hills, tall grasses (often mistaken for wheat), and wide-open views of the Blue Mountains create a backdrop that feels like the country but is just minutes from town. The golden tones look beautiful year round, and there's plenty of room to spread out and explore.
All year
➡️ Save yourself a few steps by
parking at the top of the drive
(not the main lot)
➡️ A great spot to include
your animals (dogs, horses, etc).
➡️ Works well for families of all sizes.
See something you like?
I'd love to hear about it.
With over 120 wineries in the valley, there's no shortage of stunning options. Neat vine rows, rolling hills, and tasting rooms that range from rustic barns to sleek modern estates. It's a relaxed, fun atmosphere, and the fact that you can sip a glass while you’re there doesn't hurt either.
Spring through fall
➡️ Most wineries are happy
to host a portrait session.
Just reach out ahead of time
and you'll almost always get a yes.
➡️ Save the real wine tasting
for after the session. Purple teeth
and rosy cheeks make for a
fun evening, but not the best portraits.
➡️ If you have a favorite winery,
that's the one to use. Always go for
the place that means something to you.
Wheat fields are a Walla Walla staple. They're a nod to the valley's agricultural roots, and when the light hits those rolling golden hills, it's easy to see why they're one of the most requested settings.
Early summer
➡️ Wheat fields are usually pretty dense,
which means walking through them
isn't easy and legs tend to disappear.
If you love the aesthetic but want
something more accessible, consider
the tall grasses at Whitman Mission
or Bennington Lake instead.
➡️ The golden tones of harvest
might be what comes to mind first,
but don't overlook the
lush green fields in spring.
If you love the outdoors, this is the location for you. Just a short drive from the valley floor, the Blue Mountains deliver sweeping views, tall evergreens, and wide-open meadows. Summer gives you golden light over endless rolling hills. Come winter, the mountains turn into something straight out of a holiday card.
Summer or winter
➡️ Don't wait for snow to come
to the valley- drive to it.
The mountains are the easiest way
to get a winter wonderland backdrop
on your schedule, not the weather's.
Wallula Gap is unlike anything else in the area, where towering basalt cliffs meet panoramic views of the Columbia River. The landscape is raw and dramatic, shaped by ice age floods thousands of years ago. It feels especially well suited for engagement sessions or after-wedding adventure sessions where you want something that feels bold and cinematic.
Spring through fall
(too cold in winter)
➡️ The parking area at Twin Sisters
comes up fast and the road can be busy.
If there's oncoming traffic as you
approach, drive past, turn around
where it's safe, and come back.
➡️ This is rattlesnake country.
Sightings are not frequent,
but be aware of where you
step and you'll be fine.
➡️ Wear sturdy shoes for the
short hike up. You can always
change into your portrait shoes
once we're at the top.
Starting to picture it? Let's make it happen.
A studio session strips everything away and puts all the focus on you. Timeless backdrops, beautiful lighting, and the result is a portrait that feels classic and refined. It's an especially great option for milestone moments like anniversaries, birthdays, or anytime you want something that's purely about the people in the frame.
All year
➡️ Studio sessions give you maximum
flexibility and control. They can be
scheduled any time of year, any time of
day, and there are no weather worries.
There's nothing more personal than your own home. Your front porch, your backyard, everything you've spent years making yours. Home sessions feel intimate and relaxed, and the portraits ends up meaning more because the setting is part of your story too.
Spring through fall
➡️ One of the most underrated
options on the list.
People don't always think
of their own home as a portrait
location, but it can end up being
the most meaningful one.
➡️ From a practical standpoint,
home sessions are hard to beat-
air conditioning, bathrooms, your full
wardrobe, snacks for the kids.
Everything you need is already there,
making home sessions especially
convenient for families with little ones
or elderly family members.
Adventure sessions are for people who want something completely their own. They often revolve around an activity you love, whether that's boating, camping, dirt biking, or hiking to a place that means something to you. Having something to do together makes the session feel natural, and the end result is a portrait that's truly one of a kind.
All year
➡️ These usually take shape
during our planning meeting.
We’ll talk about what you love to do
and where you love to go- you may
be surprised what can become
an incredible portrait!
➡️ They can take a bit more work
to pull off than a typical session,
but the results are worth it, and you'll
remember the experience long after
the photos are on the wall.
If you're planning a family vacation (or destination wedding), you're already halfway to a great portrait session. You're somewhere beautiful, everyone's together, and the mood is relaxed. Beaches are a natural fit since they photograph beautifully and offer a look that's completely different from anything we have locally. A vacation portrait turns a great trip into a lasting keepsake.
All year
➡️ Beach sessions are all about
golden hour. Plan to start about
an hour before sunset to get the
best light, the best colors, and the
most comfortable temperatures.
➡️ Keep wardrobe light and comfortable.
Flowy fabrics, bare feet, and soft colors
all work beautifully against sand and water.
➡️ Do your research ahead of time to find
the photographer who’s right for you.
Or just give me a call- I’m happy to travel 😉
Consider these the honorable mentions. They didn't get the full write-up, but they've all earned their spot on the list and can be perfect for the right session.
An ever popular alternative to
Bennington Lake. Open fields,
split-rail fences, and golden grasses.
Rows of lavender in bloom make for
a dreamy, one-of-a-kind backdrop.
Timing matters here- the season is short.
Walla Walla has some beautifully designed
vacation rentals. If you're already staying
in one for a reunion or getaway,
it can double as a portrait location.
Great options for high school seniors.
That's the full list.
Any surprises? Any favorites?
When you're ready, let's figure out the right one for you.
